FSC-Certified Custom Packaging: A Buyer’s Verification Guide
Quick answer
For FSC-certified custom packaging, verify the proposed supplier, the material claim and the transaction route before approving a logo. A paper sample or a factory certificate alone does not establish what your order can claim. Ask which box or bag components are covered, who will authorise the label and which sales documents will identify the supplied goods. Keep material performance checks separate from certification checks.

At a glance
Check FSC claims for custom boxes and paper bags: label types, supplier certificates, component scope and the documents to confirm before artwork approval.
A buyer may want verified forest sourcing, recycled fibre or a combination of the two. Those are different briefs. FSC describes three label categories; choose the eligible claim from the documented supply route rather than picking whichever logo looks strongest. Source: FSC label explanations.
FSC label meanings and buyer questions
Label
Meaning for the forest-based material
Question for your order
FSC 100%
Virgin material from FSC-certified forests.
Which forest-based components does the approved product claim cover?
FSC Mix
An eligible combination of FSC-certified, recycled and/or controlled material.
Which claim and labelling system applies to this product?
FSC Recycled
Verified recycled forest-based material.
Is this the documented product claim, rather than a general recycled-paper description?
These labels are not a percentage statement about every part of a gift set. A magnet, ribbon or foam insert needs its own specification. Do not infer recyclability, compostability or food-contact suitability from an FSC label. The recycled versus recyclable packaging guide addresses that separate design decision.
02
Verify the holder and the supply route
Use FSC Search to check the organisation name, licence or certificate code and current record. Match the holder to the actual proposed manufacturing site and relevant scope. Save the dated result with the quotation documents; an old certificate screenshot can be a useful lead but should not be the end of verification.
FSC chain of custody concerns the material’s passage through the supply chain. Identify who manufactures, takes legal ownership, invoices and makes the claim. A certified production partner does not automatically extend its certificate to an independent trading or development company. Source: FSC chain of custody.
MTT’s partner-based production model makes this handoff worth resolving early. Before an FSC claim is promised, the applicable certificate holder should confirm the proposed transaction and labelling route. Do not assume an MTT invoice can carry a certified claim simply because the source factory holds a certificate.
03
Break a rigid box or paper bag into components
Start with a bill of materials. For a wrapped rigid box, separate structural board, outer wrap, inner lining and the insert. For a paper bag, separate body paper, reinforcement cards, handles and any decorative attachments. Record the proposed material supplier and claim for each relevant component.

Outer wrap and board

The quotation names only the wrapping paper.
Insert and lining
Material identity and whether included in the claim.
The insert changes after the label was approved.
Label artwork
Approved label, code, product scope and responsible holder.

Sales documentation
Which entity supplies the claim and how it identifies the goods.
The certificate and seller names do not reconcile.
This is a purchasing worksheet, not an FSC audit checklist. Ask the certificate holder or its certification body to resolve uncertain eligibility. Do not improvise a partial-product claim to fit an attractive package design.
04
Test the chosen material as packaging
Certification does not select board stiffness, folding behaviour or print appearance. If a specified paper changes, compare the actual replacement using the approved structure and finish. A recycled paper option can be suitable, but its colour, texture and forming behaviour still need approval for that design.
For a perfume rigid box, inspect wrapped corners, visible lining and insert fit after the proposed material substitution. For a shopping bag, agree the loaded configuration and handle checks. Keep those findings with the material reference. Use the material selection guide and sampling workflow to define the physical approval.
Illustrative scenario: a brand approves a pale wrap and later selects a darker recycled stock. Retain the sourcing requirement, but reopen colour and foil approval on the new stock. The earlier visual sample is no longer an adequate reference for the changed surface.
05
Release the claim and the packaging together
Before printing, reconcile the final bill of materials, holder verification, approved label file and purchase documentation. Name the person who can release artwork. Any later change of paper, site, supplier or invoicing route should trigger a claim review as well as a production review.
FSC distinguishes promotional trademark use from applying labels to products. A promotional licence does not itself permit a company to label products. Source: FSC promotional use guidance.
At delivery, check that the documents refer to the actual goods and quantities supplied. Keep the evidence with the reorder specification. This creates a usable purchasing record instead of a folder of logos that nobody can connect to the finished order.

MTT is a China packaging development and manufacturing partner. Credential references in this guide concern the relevant production partner, not certification held by MTT itself. Partner documents, current status and the scope applicable to an order must be checked before making a purchasing or artwork claim. The checklists and scenarios are editorial buying guidance, not published customer results or a certification audit.
